RENTON LIONS CLUB (RLC) CONTINUES TO SERVE
Meetings: Amidst COVID-19 state social distance restrictions, RLC has not held any meetings in person, but instead has been using Zoom for all general, board, and committee meetings. This virtual platform has proven so successful that RLC has extended Zoom meeting invitations to other clubs in the district to aid in membership retention and involvement.
Summer 2020 Highlights: RLC organized a successful Food Drive in the beginning of June, led by Lions Betty and Jim Brown, resulting in $5K donated to the Emergency Feeding Program along with loads of non-perishables.
Also, RLC supported the formation of a Highway Cleanup Committee, which meets on scheduled days to clean up of the 405-highway cloverleaf, led by Lion Nicole Mellinger.
Following a riveting program from Natalie Ellington, Founder and Executive Director of Celebrate 18! (a non-profit committed to empowering, educating, training young women aging out of foster care), the RLC board voted to sponsor 3 young ladies and their birthday celebrations providing them with clothing and other items necessary to live on their own.
RLC proudly inducted two new members, Lion Angelo Usibelli and Lion Manami Imaoka (honorary Lion), in early August. Then, amidst pandemic restrictions, Renton Lions successfully completed its annual Soft Fruit Sale fundraiser, led by Lion Rosemary Richert, resulting in 139 boxes sold.
Perhaps more importantly, RLC shifted its focus for the year to form a Food Insecurity Committee, led by Lion Lyro Downie. As a part of this committee, Secretary Jessie Waddell received approval from the RLC board to partner with REACH (The Renton Ecumenical Association of Churches) by sponsoring its 50th Anniversary Gala, where funds will directly assist in rebuilding REACH’s Center of Hope.
