The participants were encouraged to take the kits home and paint the birdhouses. An outdoor location, that enabled physical distancing, was chosen as the pickup and drop off location for the birdhouses. The Project Champions followed safety protocols for all interactions with community members. Participants were provided with instructions and a link to a video that demonstrated how to paint their birdhouse. Families were asked to return their painted birdhouse on two specific days in Moodyville Park so that a nontoxic rain shield could be applied to the birdhouses to prevent them from being degraded by the weather.

Last week the Lions supported this community project by hanging 38 Bird Houses in Hammersley Park, which is located within the City of North Vancouver. This United Way funded project was conceptualized by two Project Champions from the local community and engaged multiple-stakeholders, the City of North Vancouver, the Lynn Valley Lions, and members of the public.

The benefits of this community project continue, as Project Participants and other members of the public can enjoy the Birdhouse art installation located in Harmersley Park from now until October. Covid-19 has impacted society on many levels and this community project engaged local families and provided them with a fun and semi-interactive activity within the constraints of our new societal requirement of physical distancing. It supported mental wellness, creativity and community connections. It can also be used as framework for future community projects to demonstrate resident led projects can be executed in a safe, semi-interactive and socially/physically distancing way.
